Safety on the road: make sure you are seen!

As a cyclist you are vulnerable in traffic. Make sure you are seen: wear light or reflective clothing, make eye contact at junctions, give hand signals and ride no more than two abreast.

As a cyclist you are vulnerable in traffic. That is why it is important not only to pay attention, but also to make sure other road users can see you well. A few simple tips can already make a big difference.

💡 Make sure you are visible. In the evening hours, wear light or reflective clothing and use good bike lights. Actually, lights are a good idea during the day too! A flashing rear light stands out extra and helps drivers see you sooner.

👀 Make eye contact. Approaching a junction where you have priority? Never simply assume that a driver has seen you. Try to make eye contact and check whether the driver has actually noticed you.

👋 Indicate clearly. Use hand signals to show which way you are going. That way other road users know what you intend to do.

🚴‍♂️ Ride safely in a group. Cycle with a maximum of two people side by side. Is the road very busy or is the situation unclear? Then ride single file. That is safer and gives other road users enough space.

📱 No bike light? Your phone can help! Did you forget to bring your lights or is the battery empty? In emergencies you can also use your smartphone as a bike light. There are several handy apps available, such as BikeFlasher, which turns your phone into a flashing bike light.

Remember: being visible is not only important for yourself, but also for the safety of everyone around you.

Together we make traffic a little safer. Many safe cycling kilometres! 🚴‍♀️
